You were gone for a century, and now you return to a world in ruins. The Grand Arcana, your fellow deities, are scattered and forgotten. As you travel through Reliqare in your magical coach, you will meet people who work to rebuild society, and others who seek retribution for the past. Your choices determine the shape of the future.

An Outpost ...   Your Magical Coach   ...

About

In "A Stranger Comes Home", you play as the Traveller, a customisable and often cheeky deity who had left for another dimension when the near-apocalypse happened back home. You will earn your keep by ferrying passengers across a magical, art nouveau inspired world, while solving problems, crafting, and possibly falling in love.

While Reliqare is on the whole a bright, welcoming world filled with diverse and loving people, there are darker themes to be uncovered. Some dialogue options may be marked with content warnings, and can be skipped.

What to Expect Now

The game has just entered alpha, with 1 - 3 hours worth of content (excluding any grinding for bonus rewards and upgrades). Much of the core gameplay is implemented. You will be able to enjoy the prologue of the main story, a few short side quests, and the beginning of some longer side-quests. You can unlock and try out...

  • Gardening (up to two planters)
  • Ferrying passengers in your coach (license lv. 1 and several reward tiers)
  • Alchemical crafting
  • Upgrading your coach at the garage (up to max level)

The majority of the art/graphics are still sketches and placeholders, but a few characters and at least one location have been completed, to give you an idea of what the visual style of the game is/will be. I have done my best to mark unfinished quests with [end patch] in the journal descriptions.

While the main story revolves around the Traveller and their bonds with the other Grand Arcana, there are already a few other unique individuals to meet in Reliqare. Keep an eye out for the Excitable Scholar, the Sullen Bookbinder, and a pair of unlikely siblings! While their side quests are not complete, you can already get a chunky taste of what's to come.

The Plan Ahead

The intention is for each major patch to continue a chapter of the main story, while implementing some additional content. I will gradually be replacing sketches with complete graphics along the entire development process, adding icons and backgrounds. And, of course, continue work on existing and new bugs.

Shout-out to my beta testers, Coco, Fox, and Mika! Without you, this game would be a mess. Thank you for your infallible help and encouragement.

For the next major patch, I intend to implement...

  • Chapter 1 of the main story with related features and new characters
  • Memories, which can be collected and lost upon death
  • The ability to pick up multiple items during shopping and alchemy
  • An indicator for your distance to your target  without opening the map

For future milestones, I have planned...

  • Unlockable spells that ease travel, enhance gardening, etc
  • Dates between the player and NPCs
  • The ability to arrange dates between NPCs

Your feedback is invaluable, and will help shape the path forward!

A Stranger Comes Home" is an enchanting blend of magical adventure, crafting, and heartfelt storytelling. Even in its alpha stage, the game offers a few hours of delightful content, with intriguing characters and charming visuals that create a cozy, cottagecore feel. The customizable pronouns made me feel truly seen, adding a layer of personal connection that’s rare in games. While the game is warm and welcoming, there are deeper, darker themes beneath the surface, thoughtfully paired with content warnings for those who prefer to avoid them. Overall, it's a beautifully crafted experience that promises even more exciting developments ahead.

With a great story and several interesting mechanics, this game definitely hit the spot for me. While it's just a couple of hours long right now, you clearly get what it's about and I can't wait for more. I will be back for dates and  more gardening, great job!
